Struggling. Lost family photos

I haven't been on here for ages, but it's still all ongoing with my now-ex husband and I'm struggling.
Briefly, he was arrested October 2023 and all devices seized. He then told me about taking photos of my niece when she was little - the police are still searching for evidence. There were then other devices and items that I found and handed in, including hand written pages where he 'chose his prey' at our local leisure centre, followed young children into the men's changing rooms and exposed himself to them, for which he was handed an interim Sexual Risk Order.
My divorce finally came through in March this year, after months of him being awkward and he's continued to be extremely difficult, as our house is for sale (neither of us live there) and he refuses to take any responsibility re maintenance, leaving everything to me.
The police had previously told me that they would return my 1000s of precious family photos to me, but to top everything off, they've now told me that it's unlikely I'll get them back, as the PC they're on will be destroyed. They will ask the judge at sentencing but, even if s/he agrees, it's still highly unlikely. I'm devastated.
Has anyone appealed to the sentencing judge themselves and if so, how, and have you sucessfully got your personal files/photos back from a device that was seized?

I lost all my family photos from decades ago along with all our devices. Never got any back. It was devastating and terribly unfair.
I'm so sorry and can imagine how this must feel. It is a theft, albeit not illegal and not challengeable. My educated guess would be that the police would say it's the fault of the offender so take it up with him - and I would say that it's cruel towards the innocent bystanders of the offences so at the very least it's immoral and cruel. The police are rightly up in arms on behalf of the victims of the offences but completely disinterested and indifferent to the huge emotional damage to the innocent ones caught up in the ripples without any fault on their part. It makes me furious and I am so very sorry xx
