So my father in law is going to magistrates court tomorrow. We don't know how he's going to plead. At the time of arrest 3 years ago my boyfriend was also arrested, he has been cleared by the police now.
From what we do know is it is less than 5 images. Not sure on the categories but I was wondering if people know what will happen. I know regardless of plea it is likely to go to the crown court but does anyone know what the likely outcome is?

The most likely outcome is a suspended sentence, or a community order.
If what you say you know is correct, my son recently had far more images than that and he went to Crown Court and was given a 2 year suspended sentence. I haven't seen any custodials on here for a while now whereas there were some regularly on this forum when I began reading it in 2023.
It will depend on exactly what the charges are, and what category the images are, whether he shared them at all etc.... also if he pleads Not Guilty there will be a rather long wait for a trial and he will lose any mitigation for a guilty plea which can reduce a sentence, so if he does plead that way I hope he has a provable cast iron reason why he didn't do anything wrong (but I do understand why someone who was innocent shouldn't just say 'guilty' to get things over and done with, which does happen.)
