Lonely & Bewildered

I really don't know what way to turn!! Just when I think we can start to put this behind us a little and try to have a new normal life, my other half has been in the press again. It's all due to the job he had and now it's been reported again.

When will I stop looking over my shoulder all the time!!

Sorry just have no one to turn too

I'm so sorry lonely. I can't help but you have all my sympathy. I don't think I had ever experienced real anxiety before our first mention in the press, and every time it happens since I feel sick and a knot of pain in my chest, it's awful.

my OH hasn't even reached the plea stage yet and I've had this 3 times now, and there isn't even anything to report, literally just the charges so everyone can just make up their own story to go along with it (a single communication online with a police decoy, he was on an over 18s website and thought he was talking to an adult, just stupid carelessness in not reading his messages fully).

Without the social media this would all have been somewhat bearable, but it just escalates everything so much. I'm sorry you are still experiencing this. It's not your fault and you don't deserve the associated pain.

Lonely & bewildered

The press is awful when it drags up all those feelings again. Today's news is yesterdays chip wrappers.

There's a case in our local papers about a local teacher and every time I read it I just think; the poor family, I hope the kids are able to be protected from the gossip and bullying.

whenever anyone who doesn't know my own unfortunate experience talks about these things I steer the conversation in the direction of "the poor kids" and the shock for friends and his family and tell them "what a stupid man" to do something so stupid that would have such massive consequences.

Whilst not everyone will empathise (some find this very hard if you're supporting your person), I'm sure they will feel sympathy for those who are dragged into a mess they didn't create.

Yes the media coverage has been the worst part of this journey for my son & our whoke family, horrific, uncluding death threats. One at Magistrates, once when he pled & oh joy one more to go when he's sentenced in a couple of months, thats going to be the worst.

Yesterday's chip paper analogy is helpful, except in these days of the Internet it will never, ever go away will it? A search of his name in 20 years,30 or 50 years time will still bring this up.

CedarKey, I agree the press is the worst part. We've still got many years to go but eventually, once the conviction is spent they can request under right to be forgotten that search engines delist or remove links to the criminal convictons.

My OH is almost one year into a two year suspended sentence. He got 10 years on the register and no SHPO.

I am a little confused about the "right to be forgotten" rules, can anyone help?

Are you able to request removal of media coverage online after the two years are up or is it for the full 10 years?

The lovely folks at Red Rose are currently re-uploading past convictions (some are very historical) but it worries me it will be up soon dragging up emotions again.

Hi JoLou,

My son also received a two year suspended sentence with 10 years SOR and 10 years SHPO. We've been adviced that the 'right to be forgotten' can be applied for by anyone once conviction is spent which for my son is at the end of his 10 years SHPO.

There is the option to ask the newpaper that first published the story to take it down but in our case they refused. We also have the option to seek legal action regarding the misleading headline of my sons case but this could lead to the paper removing one or two words and then rerunning the story with a new headline which i actually wouldnt put pass them.

As for the lovely folks at Red Rose, I know my son is on there but i refuse to go on to the sight or read what what they've published about him.

The red rose founders are actually up in court today for some issues based around their sting/live feeds and information online regarding their posts not being factual and misleading.

I also heard of them live feeding a person who was not an offender at all and recently throwing a brick through a pensioners window at an address where no offender lived.

It does appear that the male founder has convictions for assault and was on the offender register himself previously but this has all not been confirmed as I have seen.

Lets hope there is a positive outcome from today and they are pulled into line and/or removed from the internet as they only appear to be in it for shock value and self approval that they are doing us all a favour when in fact they are dragging the whole system and good down.

Yes i saw something on facebook about redrose including screenshots of them discussing how they can fabricate an article with false infornation to make someone appear guilty/convicted.

Hopefully the government will step in regarding the brick being thrown and put an end to these sting groups if this is the type of behaviour that gets encouraged.
