Possession vs making

Could anyone please explain what the difference is between possession and making and the difference in sentencing etc?
In my sons case he took screenshots and shared them
only 3 times and that was in the same day so was convicted of production
this was the most serious offence and carried 2 years I think
tbh it's a very complex thing to understand
I thought production was taking the pictures or videos yourself but it's an umbrella term I believe
give the helpline a call they are brilliant with these sort of questions x

From a sentencing point of view, possession is identical to making.
There is a small legal difference, but only relevant if the person is pleading not guilty.

Kez, i thought production was the taking of the original photo causing a new image to exist. Screenshotting an image off someone else would just be "making" while the taker of that image would be convicted of production.
I think it's a bit of a grey area tbh that's why I suggested the helpline x
