Does one police investigation feed into another?

My ( now ex ) OH was arrested and charged in the summer with online child sex abuse offences, following communications with an undercover police officer who was posing as a teenage boy. He was bailed into another property which we own nearby and is not allowed to visit the family home or to have direct contact with either of our two boys.

A few weeks ago, our 17 year old son disclosed that he had been abusing him for about a year before the arrest. OH was arrested and interviewed but not yet charged. Our son has given a video police interview and I've also provided a lengthy statement.

I'd only just started to get my head around the shock of the first arrest but this new allegation is just devastating. Our son seems happy to have finally got it off his chest but I'm really struggling to understand how and why my OH could have done this to him and how he's able to live with himself, knowing that he's destoyed our family forever and may never see either of the boys again. It's horrendous.

He goes to trial later this year for the online offence and I wonder if the current investigation is allowed to be mentioned as part of that case? The investigating police officer for the new, and arguably far more serious case, has suggested that it could be next year before she's even able to charge him with our son's abuse. I don't know how joined up these two different departmenst of the same police force are but I don't feel confident that they're sufficiently sharing information with each other. I hope I'm wrong.

I wonder if he's likely to be go to prison for the online offence?

First of all, I'm so sorry to hear about this and wish you and your son all the best as you go forward.

Not sure if either of these fit your person exactly - but an offence still under investigation and not yet charged definitely can't be mentioned in another court hearing about a different prosecution, as guilt for that uncharged offence isn't yet determined officially. You can imagine how frustrating this can be when it seems beyond doubt that the 'new' offence happened but can't be mentioned just because it's taking so long to complete the investigation.

Also if it has got to charging in the timeline for that second offence, the defendant can ask for it to be considered for sentencing along with the offence they have got to the sentencing for. It gets everything over and done with which is why some people decide to do that but it's up to the judge whether that's allowed and I suspect it's not the scenario you're describing.
