Hi

Our neurodivergent son who is on the sor for 5 years (3 remaining) was advised by his offender manager that he wasn't allowed to join autism groups as he would be mixing with other vulnerable adults.

As he is verbally abused by the local community he doesn’t want to go out which for his safety I would agree although his manager believes he should grow a pair and go out.

being Autistic myself I can totally agree with our son and as his shpo is prevention to under 18 girls he feels that he should be left to his own devices and meet others online as long as they are not female or under 16 females e.g he can talk to a male of any age or 16+ female

So he was under investigation for shpo breach because a girl asked him something online - e.g draw a Labrador and he got cuffed marched down the road in front of neighbours etc it turned out she was over 18 and so he was release with NFA

so what I want to know is is there a pre approved group e.g tick-tock where people like our son can meet which is offender management friendly

This way he can safely meet people who are not going to be decoys or try and entice him without him doing it alone

I feel your pain, it is a very isolating place to be. That said I think the online world is minefield, hence finding ourselves here, and you can't truly be sure of anyone's age or motives and very easy to be accidently drawn in to risky spaces/ conversations at a time when they're under the spotlight. We don't have confidence in safely using online spaces, even WhatsApp groups with friends/ family, for that reason. Are there local support groups/ activities your son could look into and safely access instead, would maybe help him build new social groups outside of immediate community who are aware/ abusive.

Hi both ,

Yes, my 27yr old autistic son is in the same boat, it's catch 22 really. He was stung by vigilantes for communicating with an underage 'girl' who originally said she was 18. He told them he was autistic and looking for a friend. Because he is now on the SOR, he has been told he can't attend disability football training and his life is even more restricted than it was. Finding a friend is even harder for him now .

That sounds really harsh, does the football training have under 18s attending?

Are you saying that he cannot join an online group for autistic people, even when it is fully moderated?

The NAS has a forum, with moderation. Surely this would be enough for the OM?

Shf, it's an adult group - all over 18s but it's held on senior school grounds. I wouldn't mind but a support worker accompanied him at all times. It's so black and white . It's run by Mencap apparently, he had been going for 3 yrs

I just can't understand the logic of some of these restrictions. What chance do they have to rehabilitate and rebuild healthy lives.
