How long does it take from when the CPS authorise charges to those charges being given to the offender? What follows on from that I assume magistrates for a plea hearing?

Hello,

With my OH it was very quick from charges being authorised to being charged, actually only a week, but originally they said it would be within a couple of weeks, he just had the option of going to the station earlier, which he accepted. Then from that it was about 3 wks to magistrates (that 3 wks included the Xmas period though), then from magistrates it was passed on to crown, original date for crown was 4 wks on from magistrates, but the 1st date for crown got adjourned the day before, and was pushed back another 4 weeks. Once charges are authorised the whole process speeds up, was all done within 3 months from that point (would have been 2 months if it hadn't have been adjourned). Hope that helps

For us it was 6 weeks with CPS, then 8 weeks to plea and a further 9 weeks to sentencing x

Ok thank you it's hard to know the time frames because the internet gives different answers and the police for us aren't telling us a huge amount. They told us that charges had been authorised back in February but as yet they haven't told us when there will be a plea hearing so I'm not sure what the hold up is.

Really good to hear these reports of it happening quickly, it's bad enough going through it but going through the wait too is torturous.
For us, knock was Feb 22, charges March 25, crown court October 25. I am still outraged by it all and feel so sorry for those experiencing similar waits.
Listening to you guys makes me wonder if they are finally getting through this quicker ????????

hi
my OH was officially charged on the 19th of December last year. He then appeared at magistrates court in February this year. It was then referred to Crown Court last week but we had to wait 2 1/2 years before the police had done all their research and actually charged him

I know it's a very very stressful time waiting for the charges to come and to go to court. It feels like you're living on a knife edge wondering what will happen. I hope the outcome for you is good and it happens soon. take care xx

It's frustrating waiting and not knowing all the time. And there seems to be no consistent time frame. We know charges have been authorised but we don't actually know if he's actually been formally charged yet. I get the police service is stretched but the waiting is the hardest part.
