For those interested in stats, CSA release trends in official data each year as a downloadable pdf. It's a bit of a grim read but the link below is for 2023/2024 which is the most recent release. Previous years can be accessed by using the search function on the website and searching 'trends in official data'.

The most interesting details are on page 43 of the report. A breakdown of sentencing outcomes for both images and grooming. There is no mention of communication offences at all, so I assume it is covered by the grooming category.

19% custodial

grooming

49% suspended

25% community

28% custodial

This confirms that suspended sentences are now very common for both types of offence and that prison is becoming even less likely for image offences.

That's interesting to see. Imagine a more recent report must be due soon for 2024/25 and be interesting to see if any significant changes as the numbers continue to rise. Surely there has to be more of a focus on prevention activity to halt this tsunami.
