Hi all.

was just wondering if anyone has any experience of changing their persons name to avoid media attention/recognition.

I'm aware that they can use both old and new names in court but was more wondering about how successful that was for people.

and if people have done it was it done before/after charging? If so, how did you know they were going to be charged and changed it beforehand as I've read you can be charged at any point (so you wouldn't know it was coming and be able to change name).

also, how did it affect work if any? As in did they havd to tell their work for HR or payroll things or not?

hope you understand what I mean. Thanks

We did it via our solicitor, after 2nd interview when we knew charges were coming that week. You'll often know charges are coming because they'll invite you to the station to charge you, a few days before.

The name change we did was by declaration rather than deed poll. You SHOULD then use that name for everything. Not everyone does. It cost a few hundred pounds but we needed it done within 2 days.

We changed the name back after sentencing, for us this was about 4 months because we had to have a second sentencing hearing due to an error in the pre sentencing report

We didn't go in the media. His old name was mentioned at the plea hearing but not referenced at all subsequently. It was easy to change it back. The police were very relaxed about it, I believe it happens all the time. The judge also didn't mind, our solicitor made clear the change had been made to protect me and our children

Thanks for your reply.

its good to know that you get a few days warning when they invite you down.

can I ask why you chose declaration instead of deed poll?

and also, when you say you should use this for everything, what are you referring to? As in updating all records and work records like I mentioned? Or is it more a case of when moving forward use it for everything?

thanks

Just thought I'd add my cent. We decided not to go with a name change because this came onto us when our business started growing. The advise we were given by a crisis person was that if someobody wants to, especially when the case is easily searchable, having changed your name will create another crisis....and it was much better to put out a statement that newspaper articles could refer to to take accountability and avoid making it look like we were trying to hide it.

I totally understand wanting to change your name to start anew because that's what we were adamant on doing. Thought I'd just show you the other side too so you can reflect on whether its a good idea.

Also, thought I'd add that if your partner was a teacher or anything of the sort where another agency is involved - they will use their old name (the name that they used when working within that industry) so changing the name and changing it back isn't really feasible.

Like Inthemoment said, my son changed his name at second interview when he knew he was going to court. That was almost 5 years ago and he's never changed it back; we have a distinctive surname which was one of the reasons for changing. Never had a problem, touch wood!
