Me and SO are both still in university so we don't really have experience with what jobs searching is like. I'm aware that, because the SHPO is 5 years long, it will turn up on the basic check for 6 years and then stop. Off of the back of that, I'm wondering how long this will be something that hangs over them? They're primarily working in art and coding and not with children. I'm really worried about financial stability in the future and if building a life together will be possible now, doubly so because they're physically disabled so can't do a lot of the jobs suggested here for getting on your feet after this. Are we doomed? I'm just feeling so much despair and hopelessness right now about job prospects, wanted to know the experience of others.

Basically, I'd like to know:

- Does every job DBS check? I know that not every single one has to but, realistically, do they anyway?

- What type of jobs are available really after this?

- How do you explain a 6 year gap of good jobs? 2 years are taken out by university but it's still rough.

- What type of jobs do offenders typically do after this?

- Can we build financial stability? Again, they're physically disabled so I worry extra.

- Is there any way to explain this after they DBS check it? Does transparency at interviews work well?

Great questions! In my person's experience very few jobs are a possibility now. He has multiple LDs so his field was small to begin with, but now, almost nothing is an option. Add to this the fact that half his week is taken up with rehab activity, therapy, probation, RAR days, and unpaid work days.... hah!

Good luck to you both.

Hi

Not all jobs DBS check, only if working with vulnerable people/coming into contact with children.

My person works in a factory now, didn't have to disclose as wasn't asked, not customer facing, no under 18s work there, no DBS. He has been told he won't be able to work in retail etc. due to not being able to control who you have contact with. He was unemployed for 6 months, which isn't bad, and had a lot of support from probation, job centre, other organisations to help offenders back to work.

I understand that factory work may not be suitable due to physical disability.

If a job interview states DBS needed, there's no point applying. Most jobs would turn down a convicted sex offender to be honest, but if not asked, there's no need to disclose, but obviously making sure that the job doesn't breach the SHPO/risk anyone's safety.

Lots of companies have blanket rules as do agency, about no sex offenders, so it isn't easy I'm afraid.

Make sure all benefit entitlement is in place,

Good luck
