Understanding of Kik

Hello, I'm hoping someone on here might know a little more about how Kik works than I do and can help me understand the way people commicate on it.
Am I correct in thinking that it's similar to whatsap in the sense that, if someone sends someone an image it's automatically on your screen without you needing to 'download' it?
