Our son is currently in prison, in Scotland. He was not expected to receive a custodial sentence, so no provisions were made regarding his bank account. His bank card was taken along with his other possessions, when he arrived at the prison. The issue is that he has regular direct debits and if they are not cancelled soon, then he will be in the red, especially now that he is no longer receiving benefits. We do not have power of attorney for him, also it would take months to set up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would contact CAB, they will know how to manage this.

There is very good information on the Unlock website. It mentions setting up a third party mandate that can be used for accessing bank accounts. It also mentions how a prisoner can access their account. Hope this helps

My son only had payment going out on his mobile phone when I was left to deal with his affairs . I called his bank and they were very good, I had no power of attorney in place.

I was allowed to freeze his account and as far as I remember that solved the problem. He can reopen it when released.

Confidentiality is obviously in place but I'm sure they come across this regularly and I'm sure there's a way round it. So I'd say a call to his bank for advice first port of call.

Hi I've worked for a bank in the past and we are used to dealing with people in prison. Contact the bank in question to find out their process and to potentially set up a 33rd party mandate. In the meantime your son should be able to book a call through his prison officers to contact the bank and cancel for and get notes added around his circumstances. Many change their address to the third part authority so letters to there or change it to the prison address. In the meantime he should write a letter to the bank with a signature to cancel for Tec as now a days we all use codes 3rd for a higher security so dependant on the bank he may not be able to answer security questions alone to change his contact details this they may as for a letter to check signatures
