Character reference - how significant?

If it gets to court and this is required? I cannot supervise due to documented past DV - is this likely to have an impact on being able to rely on using a character ref?
Anyone can write a character reference. The focus of any sentencing would be on the person being sentenced, not on the person writing the reference.
Although if a person were pleading not guilty and the character reference was used as part of a trial, then it might be questioned by the prosecution.

Thank you, sorry I meant as records show he doesn't really have a good character - would they look at that?
And also he doesn't really have anyone to do a good one for him? How much does it make a difference to the cases?

I expect there are some positive things someone could write, eg, work or study history, finances in good order, good qualities, caring for a relative, remorse for the offending, etc?
I wrote a character reference for my OH for his sentencing. The judge referred to it during his reasoning for the sentence he passed (community order) so we firmly believe that my letter made a significant difference. Mine was the only character reference he had.

I think previous character is something that is constantly when looking at aggregating or mitigating factors, so previous good character would be a strong mitigating factor and go in his favour but previous poor character would do the opposite.
