Unsure what to do

I have so far decided to stay in contact with my dad because I have a son that does love him and we live far enough away that we can pretend that the arrest doesn't affect us.
He was arrested this year, and it came as a shock to us all.
I found out that he was on an app I've never heard of. His story is that he recieved something and immediately deleted it.
When he was arrested, it seemed like he knew he was expecting it, that it had been flagged somehow and sent to the police.
Wondering why someone would be on such an app if not looking for trouble? He is a married man.
Would vigilantes send something on purpose and then let him know he was flagged?
How would he know to be expecting an arrest?
I think he was searching for trouble and one day knew he was finally going to be arrested somehow.
Happy to receive advice, I'm not sure if I should just give up on him.

I was told that certain images have tags on them and the police are alerted if they are downloaded
My kids were much older when we got the knock. My eldest said straight away that he didn't want any contact with his father and the younger one has followed suit. They are old enough to make their own decisions but I haven't tried to talk them out of it.
I totally understand that it must be so much harder with a younger child.
