Awful :(
Is the solicitor one that specialises in these sorts of cases?

Shocking, but not surprising. The justice system is such a mess and officers leaving is the most common explanation for the cases that take over 3 years. There have been a few on here.
I would suggest writing to the local police and crime commissioner, or to your MP. A long time ago, I used to work in an office that dealt with MPs complaint letters and I know they are taken very seriously indeed and given top priority.

I'm so sorry it is taken so long. I'm in Scotland although I thought it was taking ages I now realise it was much quicker as our knock wasn't long after yours. One of the reasons I left was because of my adult children. I couldn't face the rest of my life not being involved in theirs. If I had stayed they would have distanced themselves because of their father. We are caught in the middle and sadly have to make these choices.
3 and half year from knock to NFA. They ruined our health and life finding nothing

Your son will be in shock at hearing about it, just as you were back when it happened. Give him time, he will come round. Instinctively he and his wife protect their child and lash out at you..it is already changing tho, so good on them! It may change again as they process things. Be prepared.
I hope the mtg with the solicitor is excellent :)
