Buildings and contents renewal
Notifications OFF
Hi, I have just had my renewal through and it looks like I need to notify them that my son, who us on the register, lives with us. Do I need to go to certain insurers or just notify my renewal one?
Hi Deana
It may be worth checking with your insurers if they will cover you as our previous insurance despite having used them for over 30 years and only ever making one claim, refused to pay out on a second claim and even threatened us with fraud because we ha failed to inform them my husband had received a conviction. This happened around the time of his court hearings so you can imagine the stress. After a brief battle they did agree to repair our damaged roof and dropped the threat of fraud but informed us we could not continue to have a policy. We looked on the "Unlock" website as they provide a list of insurers/brokers who unfortunately charge extortionate fees for offenders. Depending on if and when your son received his conviction I would also explore "Monzo" as they ask if there have been any "new" convictions in the last 3 years (I think those time lines are right) and if that is the case you will get cover for alot less than the Unlock brokers. Good luck, will be interested how you get on.
Best wishes Katie x

We got our buildings/contents through a broker called Intelligent Insurance. I had to provide exact details of his conviction and sentence but got it in writing that they would cover us before I went ahead and applied/paid. The last thing we wanted was a company to decline to insure. It almost doubled our premium but at least we are covered.
I just had a play on Monzo and it said any unspent convictions. So I clicked that there were and it said it wouldn't be able to cover. That was just a quick play on it though.
We worked through the list on the Unlocked website (not all will provide cover for every type of offence).
Eventually went with Homeprotect for house & Privilege for the car. Yes, the prices were higher, but we've just seen a big reduction on the current year when we came to renew.
Good luck

We are with home protect, it is 3-4x more expensive so be prepared for that. You are I likely to be able to stick with your normal one - always read the small print!
Thank you for all the replies. Its not something I thought about at all.
