Hi everyone, I know you'll all understand what I'm going through right now, this is all unbelievably heartbreaking. My son had just started his A Levels, got himself a Saturday job and things were finally looking good for us after a few rough years (other circumstances). Then he got arrested. Released under investigation, but has Category A B C images on his phone. We're absolutely devastated. He's been expelled from school and had to give up his job (was working with minors), and we don't know where to go from here.

Hello,

I'm so sorry to hear that, it is the worst feeling. We are out the other side now, so wanted to reassure you that things do get better.

Has he been expelled from school because of this? Please reach out if you have any questions.

Hugs xx

Yes, permanent school exclusion, we're just dealing with the fallout at the moment. Seeing if it's possible for him to continue A levels or not ...

Glad to hear that life has got better for your family, that's reassuring. Thanks for responding

That's so unfair. Could he move to a college instead to compete his A levels, as they will be all 16 and over? My son did not have to leave school, we had a SW contact us and she said she was going to inform school, but we didn't even hear from school about it! He was 15 at the time, the end of year 10.

We have younger children also but he got to stay with us. The SW who called us only once, did not seem overly concerned and said they get so many referrals like this now.

Let me know if you want to talk or have any further questions. We waited a long time and in the end despite lots of images being found, it was resolved out of court and with a community resolution order, which isn't a charge.

He is 17 now and doing A levels.

If you are in the Midlands I can recommend a solicitor, she was amazing.

xx

Sorry the school have expelled your son before any charges etc I guess it's a safe guarding thing being a school. Do you have a local 6th form college or maybe evening class college he could do his a levels at?.

Does your area have a NEET team who maybe able to help with what is available for him to access?. It might come under post 16 career advisor.

Alternatively you could look at doing a levels with an online provider.

Thank you Beach and Crushed for your replies.

There is a local college but doesn't offer A Levels. There's another one a bus and train ride away which we contacted but admissions are closed unfortunately for this year.

I contacted an Exclusions officer who was lovely but didn't know how to proceed with post 16, but I haven't tried NEET yet.

Unfortunately my son had a large amount of images, many Cat A, so understand the position of the school but he's now just at home with no direction.

We have a multi agency meeting today and we will be put on a Child Protection Plan for our daughter, but we will also try get some answers about his education.

So Crushed, your son wasn't charged? Does that mean a clear DBS or not? I think the issue with my son is the amount and the Categories of the images unfortunately.

Thanks again

So sorry you're going through this! My son was 17 when he was arrested. His bail was no contact with under 16s so college we're happy for him to stay. We're 15 months in, is your son on bail or released under investigation? My son didn't have many images but it was more sharing between one other on Snapchat. It's horrific and we just want it to be over! My son was 16 when tge alleged crime happened but as the investigation is taking so long hes now classed as an adult.

So sorry to hear this. School's response seems unfortunate. Whilst my son wasn't able to keep going in because of bail conditions requiring supervising they couldn't have been more supportive and offered to put supervision in place (he didn't want that as no one knows) and gave him online support. Even let him resit an exam at home and sent someone to adjudicate. And arranged a leavers hoodie for him, even though he didn't go to any of the end of term celebrations. He ended up failing everything and missed out on all the social stuff but theirs support and understanding meant so much to him and us. It really is very cruel to add to his challenges right now. What we've said now is no rush to do anything just focus on healthy things each day, walks, reading etc and in time we can work on education and jobs. It's hard but the process makes it all so difficult.

Hi Patty,

No he didn't get charged. Apparently they could disclose it on an enhanced DBS under additional information if they feel it is relevant, however as he was a minor it is unlikely they said. He had all categories and approx 300 in total, however they were similar age to him which went in his favour and also it looked like there was elements on grooming online. How many images have they said there are for your son?

Hope you're okay xx
