Hi, this is regarding an online offence my 21yr old son is currently under investigation for. He had the knock a few weeks ago. During a messy break up He sent an explicit video of his then girlfriend to another friend online. He did not intend for this to harm her at all not did he ask for it to be distributed. He has also been accused of having potentially underage images on his phone. He did not think these were underage.

He had a lawyer represnet him when he was arrested, but was so distressed he was advised 'no comment' throughout the interview.

My question is would you advise that we pay for a specialist solicitor? Or stick with his existing representatives. Does anyone have any experience of this?? Much appreciated

A specialist solicitor will have the experience to get the best outcome, and will take the time needed to familiarise themselves with the case.

A specialist solicitor will take the time to speak to your son in depth where as the duty one will probably just turn up just before court. We did pay for a specialist one for my grandson in the end when after a two year wait it was decided to prosecute. He did argue for lesser restrictions which grandson got but seeing other cases of his sort of age group most seem to receive the same sort of sentence! The fact that they took the time to visit him at home and spend a few hours talking to him helped with him being able to face the court proceedings as his mental health was so bad at rhe time. I must say it cost an absolute fortune though so get any cost confirmed before deciding.

Thanks for the response. Such a difficult decision to make without knowing even if any charges are going to be made.

Charges will probably be made, and the outcome harsher without best legal support. Perhaps phone the helpline and see what they advise?
