so obviously my husband has no phone at the moment but is paying a contract. Where does he stand legally on being able to ask his provider for a replacement sim to use in a non Internet phone, as I'm assuming his bail means he can't go on Internet? He is at his mums and I can only contact him via his mum and sister which is fine as he is not mentally ready to talk to me yet but as he gets stronger I'm not sure where he stands with this. I'm thinking in terms of solicitors etc and contacting helpline would all be easier if he had access to phone. His mum doesn't even have the Internet at her home. Its almost like with lockdown too he has no way to access the outside world independently!
Hi there!
My partner spoke to his lawyer and was told it was fine to get a new SIM and get the contract pulled over too. It is another smart phone he has, which is also fine as long as internet history isn't deleted and it can be checked when asked at any time :)
Hope this helps! X

Thank you ill get him to check his bail conditions.
My hubby got another phone, with new sim so kept same number. Blocked all internet with parental controls, he has email and maps for work, that's all.
My husbands phone was destroyed after evidence was taken from it. He used a really old phone that was able to call and text. He could have had a smart phone as long as history was left on. He chose not to have this for his own security, he did not want to have internet access. X
I am interested in this thread of conversation, my husband was arrested over a month ago now and not having his phone is causing the family all sorts of issues, mostly with updating of other devices and payment details being held in his phone.
His bail conditions say no internet unless in library or on work devices, but they took work devices away and libraries are not open right now, so he can't even get on personal email account.
Could he get new sim and new handset - I would insist on him having no internet, but wondered if police would have an opinion on him trying to get his number and friends and family numbers back?
Is use of apps seen as using the internet?
Any advice would be helpful

My hubby doesn't have bail conditions that stop him having a phone or Internet access so I'm sorting my old phone for him. That said if bail conditions do say he can't have access I would check with police. Apps such as for banking etc all use Internet but without Internet access many of us are stuck ad we do everything online. I'd check rather than take a risk as with it being in bail conditions he could then get in trouble for breaking bail. Maybe in light of the lockdown etc they may be abld to revisit his bail conditions, not sure how that works xx

KDBL, if your husband has registered DO NOT let him use the library computers. This is for his own safety. Police need to be able to check his history at any moment. If someone else has been using the library computers for illegal activity he could be questioned. X

Sallyblue and Andrea - thank you I would not have thought of that, although why would it offer library use if this is a risk?? He has not been charged yet, these are just his bail conditions. Luckily for us libraries are not open right now!
As you say very difficult as our whole life is run from internet and mostly from his phone, even our doorbell ( we have one of those ring ones! )
I will go back to police before getting replacement sim and use of apps then.
It all makes me so nervous, I want to make sure he is not making situation worse but also need some normality in our lives.

It really is tricky my love. So many restrictions whilst trying to be "normal". If he has not been charged or signed the register he may well be free to use the library computers. I would still personally avoid it just to be safe. He wouldnt want to be accused of someone else illegal activities. Mind you goodness knows when the library will reopen. It's a blessing in a horrid wicked way. X
