Sentencing

HI all
I know sentencing does vary alot but what sentence has your loved ones/ friends received my friend is under investigation for iioc and I know it depends on the number of indecent images found and what category they fall into but I am just wondering what the most common sentence is for this sort of offence as since day 1 he has fully admitted to it and he is finally receiving the right mental health support.
Thanks

Hi Sam_Tyler8,
We have noticed that your post has not yet received any replies. I hope that other members in a similar situation may be able to provide some replies but, in the meantime, I can provide more general advice. I would firstly encourage you to phone us on our anonymous and confidential Stop it Now! Helpline (0808 1000 900), if you have not done so already. On the helpline, you will be able to discuss your concerns in more detail and receive more tailored advice.
It is also really positive to hear that your friend is receiving some support for their mental health. In terms of sentencing, as you have mentioned, this can vary greatly between individual cases depending on many different factors so it is best to avoid making comparisons as this is unlikely to be accurate and may provoke further anxiety. Instead, I would suggest that you encourage your friend to focus on elements that they do have control over at present. This can include addressing their mental health and addressing their offending behaviour such as through our self-help modules for those who have viewed IIOC, which can be accessed here: https://www.stopitnow.org.uk/concerned-about-your-own-thoughts-or-behaviour/concerned-about-use-of-the-internet/. Your friend may also wish to call us on the helpline to receive further advice and resource recommendations.
For any legal queries, it is best to seek professional legal help. This can be through speaking with a duty solicitor or this can be sourced privately, such as through contacting The Law Society (https://www.lawsociety.org.uk/) where you will be able to find a solicitor by speciality and location.
I hope that this information has been helpful.
Kind regards,
Lucy
