From memory plain clothes police officers will arrive (with warning) to deliver the charges (in an envelope). These will be by CPS. He will then have time to consider whether the charges are accurate or if he needs to plead guilty, this will be at magistrates.
A not guilty plea will mean it will go to court in front of a jury which will take longer than if a guilty plea.
