If pleading not guilty it will have to go to trial with a jury. I haven't got through this with my partner because he pleaded guilty to his charges. If you Google the charge there will be resources that let you know the minimum and maximum penalties.

The sentencing is down the judge and their decisions are not always consistent across the UK. Some have had suspended sentences where others for the same or very similar cases got custodial.

Best to discuss with a lawyer on what to expect next, especially how long it can take to get a jury and trial arranged. Also a character reference letter to the judge might be worth writing up.

Hi

my partner was charged in February for a grooming offence not sure what section, probably along the lines as you've said. He had been talking online in a chat room to a underage girl and arranged to meet, it was a police decoy. He was never granted bail and me or his dad weren't very well informed on the case, it also happened so so quickly so we weren't told anything about writing letters to the judge and he wasn't able to show that he was taking action for what he'd done because he was remanded in prison. He pleaded guilty as suggested to do so by solicitor, so it's different to your case, he was sentenced just after lockdown in April. He got 2 years in prison and 2 years on license when he comes out . I thought and still think his was a harsh sentence to similar cases I'd seen who got suspended sentences, I think it all goes with the judge on the day!! Which I personally think is wrong.
I would ask your sons solicitor if there's anything you can do, like majestictopaz said some people get character references for the judge.
