When to get a solicitor

It's very early for us, almost 3 weeks since the knock. But I would like to understand the process better. My son was abused from the age of around 7 for 3 years. My son does not want to press charges but the whole thing seems complicated and foggy. He was given a legal aid solicitor but he said she wasn't very helpful so we'd like to change but then someone said you can't? Does anyone know the best time to get a solicitor. I know it will be around 2 years till we here anything but I feel I can't just do nothing?
You can definitely change solicitor - and I'd say the earlier the better (we wish we had changed earlier). My husband had a duty solicitor who was rubbish. We then changed to a specialist solicitor much further down the line who was excellent and really knew her stuff. I'd advise you to start ringing around. My husband spoke to quite a few before making a decision - we weren't entitled to legal aid but many of them will take these on. We literally just googled solicitors who specialise in Ilioc and went from there. Good luck xx
Sorry I'm just thinking that legal aid might complicate things when wanting to change but still ring around and get some advice. Lots offer a free a consultation over the phone. Also the process for us was quite quick (around 6 months) so you might not be waiting as long as you think?
