Sentencing

So my husband spoke to his solicitor and he said this!
"You have three charges but what the judge does on the day is take the highest charge with a sentence and work on the sentence for there."
So for example if one charge had 2 years and the other had 1 year then the judge would only use the 2 year sentence and not add the other charges years together as they are all part of one conversation at just one time.
Is this actually true?

Hello. I'm not sure how it works each time but in my partner's case they didn't add up all the time limits, they just went with the worst one. For example, my partner was charged for possession of animal imagery as well as possession and distribution of iioc up to cat A.
He got suspended sentence for two years. It kinda annoyed me tbh because I would have wanted or believed it should be added up together. It felt like the animal abuse was ignored. But I assume for cases like this it is relatively common to go with the highest as these charges tend to be related/linked?.

Hi there!
Im not really sure if that's right, but if your solicitor has told you this, they would be irresponsible to tell you something that is untrue. From my experience my husband had 5 charges and each one was given a sentence with a reduction due to a guilty plea. Then it was added together. Not sure if that helps or not. Some judges are more lenient and some are tougher, there seems to be no consistency at all.
Sending my best wishes

I think he's right - it's called a concurrent sentence, meaning the sentence for each charge/offence runs at the same time.
Ah yes. It was concurrent for my partner. I couldn't remember the term at the time.
Nottosurewheretogo,
my husbands solicitor told him they tend to take the worse charge and go from there i guess it all depends on wat the charges are but our judge did only take the worse chharge and dealt with that if that makes sense
