When devices are taken thrn some returned and others sent for forensics. Are only ones which have images etc on sent for forensics? Just wondering why some get returned really quickly and then others sent off.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Police have had them 9 months now. They apparently did confirm they found nothing on one device (but this was actually his dad's that he had) but from what I understand they took atleast 3 of his personal phones (some old some newer) and a couple of laptops and a tablet.

In my partners case, they did a triage and found something suspicious. They then sent all devices to forensics (forensics was more about copying drive, and confirming images, as opposed to how the images got on the device). Promised that they would get the less suspicious devices tested first, and then relase them (this didn't happen). They wrote their report, a streamlined forensics report. Brief and lacking details. Didn't share the report for about 5 months, day before pleading hearing. After sentence he tried to collect devices which were clean. Claimed they needed to hold them in case there was anything on them, when challenged admitted they were lost. Then they found them many months later.

Morning all,

Just a little update. Knock on the door came in July, eight devices taken. I know IIOC were viewed on the one phone taken, all others are clean. OIC came back to the house in September asking for the chargers to the devices and said they were hoping to have all devices back at the end of September.

Yesterday, partner called Solicitor for an update as we haven't heard anything and OIC has said they are having difficulties with the phone. They said failing that the High Tech Crime unit cannot access the phone, it will be sent to another force to look at.

I'm just wondering if anyone has had experience of this, or knows the process of Forensics?

Thanks for your help. x

My sons devices were took away and never returned - we were told they had been destroyed.

Hi both,

Thanks for your responses, so are devices only returned once the investigation is concluded and/or at the discretion of the police force? Do you know where your devices are now Lee or how long they'll keep hold of them for? To be waiting since March is ridiculous. My partners phone is also Android although it is a new version so the tech is maybe more complex but they have the passwords so I'm still hoping that all of this is over sooner rather than later.

If forensics are called in does it always mean they've found something?
we've been told the computer systems can't fully clear my partners Android phone, so they need an expert to check some apps and then it can be cleared. My partner has a lot of crypto apps so I wondered if it was that.

Our solicitor has said the police haven't stated they've found anything, and that they usually would if they had. She says they usually struggle with Android phones and apps like Instagram or anything brand new (like some of the crypto apps), but this thread has me worried.
my partner has confessed to the conversation with a decoy but says there shouldn't be any images as he's never looked for them. It's been since March 2021 for us. Still on bail and no other updates so far.

My son's devices only came back last week, 2 years after they were seized and 10 months after he was sentenced. I eventually e mailed the local polce force and had no reply,as i was getting no where i rang 101 and the oprator was very ggod and gave me the e mail address for officer in charge, and as soon i was in contact with him, he confirmed he had the devices and would send them to me.
