Hi. Does anyone know if you have to tell about conviction if you move 200 miles away? My son has the conviction. He lives with us as he is autistic. He is being sentenced in August but I am terrified of people finding out. I am in my 70's and this is so hard.

Dear Isabella,

Thank you for posting on the Family and Friends forum, we understand that it is not easy to post on a forum about these difficult situations. I can see that you have not yet had a reply on your post, hopefully someone else in a similar situation can reply soon with some support.

Since details surrounding your son’s situation is unclear in this post, it is difficult to advise around when he would need to disclose his conviction. For more information surrounding this, I would recommend visiting Unlock’s website, https://hub.unlock.org.uk/information/sexual-offences/. It would perhaps be helpful to speak with your son’s probation or investigating officer to clarify your situation.

You have mentioned that you are finding the current situation hard, with this in mind I suggest that, you take some time to look after yourself. This could be simple self-care activities such as going on a walk alone or engaging in a hobby you enjoy. It is important that you take care of yourself at this difficult time. I understand that you have fears about others finding out, however, you may find it helpful to confide in a close family member or friend if you haven’t already, so that you are not struggling alone. I would also encourage you to contact our Stop It Now! helpline. The helpline is anonymous, confidential and free, on 0808 1000 900. One of our trained advisors will then be able to explore your situation with you further and provide tailored guidance and support. Our helpline advisors deal with similar concerns to yours every day, and will be able to talk these through with you and offer you the best advice and support we can.

I hope this has been helpful.

Take care,

Lucy
