Hi. My autistic son was sentenced to three years two weeks ago. He has special needs, is hypermobile , and has always had severe anxiety and social problems due to his autism. He has had no meds given to him since he went in. He is on antidepressants, also strong painkillers for his mobility. They keep saying a doctor needs to prescribe them, even though he took them all in with him they were confiscated immediately. They keep telling him he is down for an appointment with their doctor but it never happens. I have rang constantly and emailed. I tried Neepacs who also wrote emails to no avail. Yes he has done a bad thing but he is being punished . They treat them like dirt. My sons autism is high functioning and he can't ever stick up for himself. I am worried out of my mind. I cry constantly. He phones but we haven't been allowed to visit yet. My son is easily led. I am terrified of him being influenced by others inside. Has anyone else experienced any of this?
Good morning Isabella
sorry to hear what you are going through, this can be a tough time for all involved, if you have not already done so you might want to contact the prisoners family helpline run by prison advice and care trust.
when your son entered the prison he would have been seen by a member of the medical team and his drugs should have been sorted, at first he would have to be given them from the medical hatch, then after a period of assessment, depending on the drugs he might get to keep some of them in posession.
if not already done so make sure he has asked to sign on the rule to be place on the VPU vulnerable prisoners unit, he will be a lot safer here and the atmosphere is a lot carmer than the main wings. His first few days will be spent in induction and the fact her was sentenced to three years, if he is currently in a local prison from the court there is a chance he will be moved, and on the nature of the offence may be moved to a prison dedicated to people convicted of these offences, there is no garrentee just ensure that he never gives permission to be taken of the rule and back in to general population. The atmosphere is carmer on the VPU and the majority of prisoners are in for the same type of crime and just keep there head down and get on with there time.
you might find it useful to read the rules around first night in custody that the prison have to follow is called prison service instruction PSI 07/2015 early days in custody.
The first few weeks will always be tough but once you get the calls and visits sorted it will be of great help to both of you.
I hope this helps and stay strong

Hi Isabella
I am so sorry to hear what has been happening to your son and you over the last 3 weeks.
I don't know if this will be of any help but the charity Rethink have a useful factsheet on healthcare in Prisons. the link is
https://www.rethink.org/advice-and-information/rights-restrictions/police-courts-and-prison/healthcare-in-prison/
Section 9 of this factsheet includes information specifically for family and friends who are worried about the person's mental health and even includes a sample letter which may be useful to you.
The factsheet includes a list of contacts/telephone number that may be able to help you.
I am thinking of you and your son at this very difficult time.

Thank you all so much for your help and advice . My son has applied for a visit but when he checked today it said denied but gave no reason . He is upset about this. He is sharing a cell with another autistic person and sounds a lot calmer. He has been told he may see a doctor next week. Its always next week whatever he asks! I will take all the advice and try to do my best for him. He was down for a mental health assessment and is still waiting for that . He has said that the staff are mostly ok. I am just so happy that I am allowed to speak to him every day on the phone while he is in the induction unit. Will this be allowed if and when he is moved? Thank you all again .
Hi Isabella
when and if moved your son will be able to use the phones on the wing whenever he is unlocked, in some prisons there are even phone in the cell, so yes you will not lose contact with him
hope that helps

Hi there!
I had a similar problem with my OH when he went into prison. I looked on the prison website and there was a number to call if you are concerned about a loved one it was called the 'Safer custody' phone line. They called me back within the hour and someone went in to see my OH and got things sorted out. After a week everything became more organised and my OH was allowed to be in charge of his own medication.
Hope this helps.
