Changing name by deed poll
Notifications OFF
I just wondered if anyone had any experience of their partner changing their name? Did they just change their surname or full name? Is there a real difference between the free or paid version through deed poll? What difference, if any, did it make to them or you? Iv been with my partner just over a year, he told me everything about his past from the start. He leads a good and positive life and I have no concerns. He's a very changed person from who he was many years ago when the offence took place and since leaving prison. But his home was recently targeted and vandalised, presumably someone local got wind of his previous convictions. He is now thinking of changing his name as it has really shaken him up. At least as one way to help protect him from people seeing his name on post etc and googling him. He just wants to be able to feel safe and move on with his life. It feels like such a massive thing to do, your name is so much part of you. Appreciate hearing from anyone else whose gone through this or thought about it? Thanks

I hope you are doing well, my son recently changed his name by deed poll. He is soon to be 22, so although I am gutted that he has changed his name I was also all for it, not to undermine what he's done but to let him have some kind of future. So far so good everything is changed and has been so good for his mental health he changed the whole of his name, first and surname. We now all call him by his new name which for the first 2 weeks was hard lol. My son starts uni next week so is really changing his life around which I am so grateful for . I'm sorry to hear your partner was targeted. We paid for the deed poll which was 22£ with 8 copies .. I found this company on line.
I wish you luck x

Hi Sadmum and all
I changed my name by deed poll a few years back when I got married - so not to do with all this. Basically I had my maiden name added as a middle name.
Just wanted to give some practical advise. In terms of getting passport/ driving licence ect. The best thing I found was to start with the bank. I could go in and show my deed poll and that was enough to get my bank details changed. I then could get a statement printed with new address this was then enough to get my driving licence and passport done. Theoretically you can get your driving licence done online once passport is done - but I couldn't actually get that to work so did both via the post office.
I also for reference did the paid version via the deed poll website. I don't think it was very expensive and I got a few copies extra.
Hope that helps!

Hiya.
Just a couple of questions.
Would their be any point of changing your name if it wasn't in the media etc.
Doesnt your old name show up on advanced DBS checks etc.

For adults there is no reason to pay for deed poll - websites that charge look really official but it's not actually any more legally binding than printing one out yourself. If you search 'free deed poll templates' you can find them quite easily. It has to be signed and witnessed by 2 people.
The only thing the paid companies do is print it on fancy paper and put it in an official looking folder. I printed mine on normal A4 and the bank accepted it fine.
More complex for child name change - involves solicitors etc

I am seriously looking into this after the case has closed for me and hubby when we move.
New area and new id just for work purposes.

Hi Sad mum. It might be that the bank will offer video calls. I know they were doing that during Covid for people who couldn't or didn't want to leave the house.
Hope he does better soon it sounds like he is really struggling.

Please could I have the details of the company you used ?
Also if my son changes his name before charges, it's the new name that will be printed if it goes to press ?
Who does he notify bank/police/HMRC?
Im so confused as to whether he should do this before charges or after, I'm looking to protect his teenage brother/ his ex partner and my work place so I was thinking before - I just don't know

My son definately needs to change his name when released. He brushed it off when I touched on it but in the future he'll have to seriously think about it.

My person changed his name at charges, his new name was read in court and its on his charge sheet now. Barrister asking doc etc to write to judge asking for media not to print any. More info than story and new name as its a risk to nit onky him as he's nearly sucided, but but his children and mine. I'm also getting my doctor to write a letter too about the baxk lash I'll get and how it will effect my anxiety disorder x
I'd just like to add that
My person changed his name by deedpoll a week after his arrest, only used an online company. Cost like £57 for 10 copies with the intention of changing everything across to the new name, but he never did in the end. He was charged under his original name, when he went to his plea hearing he took a copy of the deedpoll with him for his solicitor to hand to the clerk. It was accepted and the charge sheet was then amended to reflect his new name.
So he was sentenced under his new name and his old wasn't uttered at all. He didn't need to changed his bank details, doctors, passport, anything like that. And he never actually used his new name at all aside from using it for the above purpose. He carried on using his actual name.

hi woman wept were in the same situation. New name approved just hoping there isn't a media photo now or the police photo x
Xxx we have put a pet8in to judge to not have oic released to press, they can run story with his new name etc but no oic or address as he's in a hostel and it's too dangerous, also to safeguard the kuds and myself from any backlash, cso we gave them a hapoy medium, it could work, it might not, but least we tried x
