I am trying to find out why all sex offenders are treated the same, I have a relative who is in prison for communication with a police decoy but will be on SOR indenfintely but a rapist gets the same time on SOR. Where is the fairness in the system?

My family member isn't in prison, but I am the same as you, I don't understand it one bit, I believe men should be punished but to the same extent as a rapist is beyond me, the mind boggles but justice / police system needs to change. Also loads of rapists are not ever convicted due to police neglect which makes my blood boil.

Every day I wake up thinking of what your asking .. my sons life will never be the same and will always be known as a sex offender .. its like if a man has a pee in a public place he is given a caution and made to sign the sor what an earth is that about.

Sorry probably wrote far too much but just wanted to say I agree with you 100 % take care x

Yes this I find heartbreaking too. My son is SO determined to fight his demons, gain confidence through education/programmes etc and rebuild his life in prison.

All he has left is his savings. No home, lost 90% of his family, no job, having to watch his back and be called a pervert/pedafile for the rest of his life. A hard working lad that received lots of praise in his role before he went down this path - totally irrelevant, gone......

once again saying this I'm not condoning what he did, never will....

I totally agree, there is also the issue that a lot of rapes go to CPS but are dismissed due to lack of evidence even though they are guilty. Yet someone can have a conversation and play out a fantasy (albeit still not acceptable) and end up in jail even though they may never act out and cause any harm?

I understand it is seen as a deterrent to send people to prison but with such a complex issue which has so much misunderstanding I personally think a lot of cases would be better dealt with psychological treatment. It's a lose lose situation all round for majority of cases you see on here.

I agree 100%. My son got a very heavy sentence which I struggle with every day. Think he needed custody but not what he got! I just pray he comes out stronger the other end and not a wreck.... esp if I'm not here to support him..... not old, but no spring chicken!!!!

just seems crazy to fill up our prisons with sex offenders and not look into why the numbers are so vast and dig into the roots of why this crime is so common.

Hello Everyone,

We can see that some people have used this forum to exchange their usernames on other forums, such as Mumsnet, so that they can direct message one another on another forum and exchange more personal information. While we know that some people have found this enormously helpful and supportive, we are also aware that this has not been everyone’s experience. To be really clear, because this is an open, public forum and anyone can read these posts, we strongly advise you not to share the username you use on other forums on this site. By doing so, you could be placing yourself at risk. For example, someone with abusive intentions could use this information to direct message you on another forum. They could send you abusive messages or, worse still, try to meet up with you. Please be careful.

We know this may be frustrating for some of you. However, we have a responsibility to ensure this forum is as safe as possible and we do not want anyone to share any information that has the potential to harm them.

Thank you for your understanding.
