First time buyer with my partner
Notifications OFF
Hi all
Just about to embark on trying to get our first property. We both will be first time buyers. I want us to go through a broker because I have seen that my partner's conviction will cause a headache and I'm hoping we find someone professional who can help.
Has anyone been in a similar situation with getting a mortgage when a conviction is unspent? I will have another look at unlock.org but would appreciate feedback from those who have been through it and in relation to online offenders.
I'm dreading the disclosure.

Hi MajesticTopaz,
Congrats on embarking on the journey of your first home! How exciting for you both! I'm not in a similar situation so doubt I'm of any help but my partner and I have always used a broker. I have checked back through the details they've requested for our initial applications and both our mortgage offers (Halifax & HSBC) and neither mention convictions. I have also checked the unlocked.org website which also confirms that these banks do not request details of convictions so I think you'll be ok.
Best of luck in your house search x

Hi orchard.
Thanks for easing my concerns. We have our first meeting with a broker tomorrow and will only mention conviction if it crops up. And yes I need to look at the unlock website again. I find it a bit over whelming sometimes on the website.
And buying a property is scary! But I really want to have my own place and have pets :)

Hi Majestic,
How did your meeting go if you don't mind me asking? I'm hoping it went well for you and you're one step closer to your own place and pets :)

We asked what kind of background checks are done by mortgage suppliers (didn't exactly say 'conviction checks') and was told it is only credit related checks. My partner did a credit check on himself and shows nothing about his conviction.
So we are just going to hope it doesnt crop up. I do believe it might for the insurance but hopefully not for borrowing money. Unfortunately the mortgage lender the broker has suggested to is is t going to give us as much of loan than we thought. We love in the south and it is so expensive here. Decided to wait for agreement from the lender to confirm what we can borrow and then continue to home hunt.
