Should we appeal?

So alot of you on here know our story, husband was arrested and questioned back in March for communication with 2 minors (actually police decoys) released without any bail conditions, sentenced at the end of October to 3 years but has already got his release date of next December. The judge "wanted to make an example out of him" and also advised lifetime on SOR and SHPO!! There was never any talk about meeting, it was 1x one day conversation and 1x 3 week conversation, both on KIK. The judge stated that there was a degree of planning and grooming involved, hence a starting sentence of 8 years. I'm unsure how you could 'plan' anything in a chat room, and I've seen the chat logs, no planning involved. My husband has never been in trouble before, has exemplary work record, attended counselling sessions and completed courses around his actions. I absolutely know he would NEVER do anything like this again.
He's now rotting in a prison cell, his mental health is seriously declining, one of his cell mates cut his own wrists (husband had to stem bleeding and call for help..... Which arrived 10 minutes later!) he was then moved cell where the prison officers apparently kept him on suicide watch, however he did it again and died! I'm having to sell our home because husband was the main bread winner. Its just doesn't seem right!!
His solicitor said that he didn't think there was ground to appeal, but I really think he was vastly let down by solicitor and barrister. At no point did our barrister argue any of the points, he just lay down and agreed! I'm so angry that the whole process cost over 5k.... For what!!??
Any advice is greatly welcomed

Hi mw
I'm not sure I can offer any advice but I thought I would reply as we're in very similar situations.
My husband, had the same charges and was sentanced in the same bracket. 1 person, 2 x conversations no plans to meet or pics. Had been doing private therapy, had a new job, completely different man and was sentance to 3 years 4 months, having to serve 20 months. The lawyer (also biggest waste of money) said he should be out in 18 but everyone else said he'll do the full half as it's a sex offense. I don't believe anyone anymore so preparing for all of it tbh. Is it the prison which has given his release date already or the courts? He was told the same about not appealing, was told its already a lot lower than the starting point for that bracket and would be thrown out and is a bigger risk for added time. I still cannot get my head around it.
Is there any way to contact the prison and raise your concerns, thats such a terrible experience for him and for you! My husband has thrown himself into education and reading to try and keep himself busy, keeping himself to himself and we talk daily. It seems covid restrictions are still very much in place even though all the extras have been removed.
I'm sorry I don't have any other advice in this area, just hope you are taking care of yourself as I very much know that's something we all forget a lot of the time x
