Hiya all.
So was reading somewhere that there is a huge court cases backlog due to the pandemic etc. Saw somewhere that to free up spaces that the magistrates are going to be given power to sentence people.
Wonder how far IIOC cases are down the line ?

Read a BBC article on that too Chelsea. Something like 60000 cases waiting to get to court. It was saying they are considering doubling the amount of time a magistrate could sentence someone to prison for, in order to help clear the backlog. Though it also said that as magistrates are volunteers rather than legal professionals like judges that puts a lot into question.
Take all suggested timings with a pinch of salt. Plea date was pretty quick after charges but sentencing has been postponed four times over a 6 month period. They let you know the eve before the court date which is really tough.

Hi Chelsea
I have also seen this!
I would think though that it will be for offences that can be tried either by magistrates or Crown.. which is offence such as PWITS etc..
If you look on the sentencing guidelines, you will see that the sentencing for this crime is too high for a magistrates.
And magistrates have an advisor with them who guide them to sentencing. A crown court judge has loads of knowledge and surprisingly I have found a lot more fairer that magistrates.
