Hi all,

I'm hoping someone else can shed some light on a very confusing situation.

My partner was arrested on 13th March and bailed for 28 days, to give Social Services chance to get in touch to make an assessment regarding the children and their safety. His condition was no unsupervised contact with any u16s. SS got in touch and agreed I could supervise contact. On Friday, the police called to say that they were ending his bail, as SS had been in touch, so there was no need for him to go back to them after the 28 days etc etc.

They've not been in touch AGAIN today, to say that they've now extended his bail?! He's now bailed until 5th June (12 weeks after his arrest) as the investigating officer has said that this is because they're having "workflow issues" with the digital forensics team, so the longer bail will mean they've more chance of getting the case dealt with quicker? I'm so confused so wondered whether anyone else had experience of anything similar?

Thanks

Xx

I dont think it's that unusual for bail to be extended. I cant remember now but I'm sure my partners bail was extended by a few weeks before he was released under investigation. Our computers were done quickly but no one mentioned the bail making any difference to that.

Hi Maria,

Sorry, I probably wasn't clear! The confusion is over the fact that, on Friday, they actually said they were dropping his bail, but then reinstated and extended it today, so I'm just feeling a bit bewildered.

With my situation the police removed their bail conditions which were not to sleep in the house and no unsupervised contact within a week but SS instated the same things. They said that police can only justify their bail conditions for a set amount of time so then SS step in?

Yes, I totally understand. SS have imposed their restrictions, which is why the police ended my partner's bail. SS restrictions are still in place, but police have now reimposed bail, supposedly so that they can have his case investigated quicker, but he's convinced the extension has only been granted because there's an assumption of guilt?

As far as Im aware, the police and Social services impose their restrictions separately and in conjunction. With us the police said unable to reside at home, and social services said for me not to be able to supervise him. The social worker said that their restriction was in place as long as needed even if bail ended.

Basically with the bail, it can be exyended by a police officer for 72 days or so, then it has to be decided by a magistrate. Im guessing that his date has been extended so that the police dont havs to do any further paperwork to extend it. I was also told they only release under investigation if they think the forensics will take so long that the bail conditions become unfair.
