Has anyone been through a remortgage when OH in prison? My mortgage advisor tells me that people who are in prison or have been within the last 3 years are not able to get a mortgage due to them not having an address.

I've had a quick Google and found a couple of sites which might be useful, but wondered if anyone else has been through this and can offer any advice? I tried unlock but they can't really give legal advice.

We're exploring taking his name off, but that will involve legal fees as we'll each need to use solicitors. Still an option, but want to make sure we have all the information before we decide. I'm not sure if my mortgage advisor really knows what he's talking about when he says that prisoners can't get a mortgage, I think he's contacted one of the big lenders who we were planning to go with and they've said no, but I guess that doesn't mean all will be the same. It will be purely based on my earnings anyway, so not sure if it will make a difference, unless they have policies about not lending to people with convictions or in custody.

Thanks in advance for any experience or advice.

Hello BusyLizzie,

Thank you for posting on the Family and Friends forum, we understand that it is not easy to post on a forum about these difficult situations. I can see that you have not yet had a reply on your post, hopefully someone else in a similar situation can reply soon with some support.

If you have not already, I would also encourage you to contact our Stop It Now! helpline. The helpline is anonymous, confidential and free, on 0808 1000 900. One of our trained advisors will then be able to explore your situation in detail and provide some support. Our trained advisors deal with similar concerns to yours every day, and will be able to talk these through with you and offer you the best advice we can.

In the meantime, it may be worth looking at Citizens Advice to see if they are able to assist with your query: https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/.

I hope this has been helpful.

Take care,

Lucy
