Hiya,

Do you mean your own job or his?

I am a teacher and was worried about this - luckily the law 'Disqualification by Association' changed in 2018 which means you do not have to disclose information to your school about a partner's crimes if cohabiting at the same address. Of course some people choose to disclose it anyway as good practice, but on the whole it should not affect your own career in terms of DBS checks. Might become more complicated depending on specific school policies though as some local authorities might have their own rules? Again it also varies if you have children in a school then you might want to inform the safeguarding officer of the family/homelife situation.

In terms of his own line of work - I suppose it depends on what his job is and how serious his crime is? Many workplaces require disclosure for crimes etc so it would have to be declared, particularly if in a role which deals with vulnerable adults or working in any sort of establishment with children. It is down to the company's policy and discretion whether they choose to hire him on that basis so I guess the chips will fall as they may and will just have to wait and see. Some companies perhaps might not even ask or require that information and can vary. Maybe Gov website or HR department in a workplace could shed more light.

My partner resigned from his job due to the organisation he worked for. He is struggling to find work as he got a suspended sentence so on probation for another two years. Obviously he is only applying for roles within suitable environments but a lot of firms are wary of employing anyone on the register. He has had comments from potential employers about how he could pose a risk to any female employees, clearly this is a misconception within society. I'd be interested to read other people's experience with this and any advice.

My partner still had his job after sentencing. They didn't know about his sentence or the investigation and it didn't need to be disclosed- this checked by probation. However he would sometimes get asked to sub contract with companies that needed a DBS. He told his work he would not pass a DBS and had to turn the work down. Thankfully they never asked why and would take him off the task. Tbh he worked in company that hired people from a range of backgrounds and would have a limited work force if they needed DBS checks all the time.

When he left the job he had to find somewhere that didn't ask about convictions and had avoided thus far not needing to do a DBS. I do dread if he ever does get asked to do one because I don't think his new job would refrain from asking why

Hi Chelsea

Just to let you know my hubby has just had a promotion. His place of work know everything and that he is RUI. He works for a branch of a very very large multinational distribution company. He is now a senior manager with a lot of responsibility. (He's also become the mental health champion after all he has learnt in therapy as he is super passionate about it now)
While I can't guarantee this will mean he will keep his job long term. It does give some comfort and they are very supportive so far.

So I guess what I'm saying is not all hope is lost!
