Hi everyone,

My brother is nearly half way through his 3 year sentence and has been told that he doesn't need to do a sex offender course in prison because he is "low risk".

In my opinion, he wouldn't be in prison if he was low risk. How can the justice system expect people not to reoffend if they haven't been rehabilitated?? Without doing a course or having any kind of therapy, they'll have no tools to help them on the outside with managing their feelings and urges.

A 3 year prison sentence seems absolutely pointless to me if they aren't going to rehabilitate the offenders. He might as well just be on house arrest.

The idea of a SHPO and police coming to do checks just doesn't help at all. Offenders are still going to have the urges and thoughts, they are just forced to not act upon them which isn't really helping with the root cause!

Sorry for my rant, but it has really angered me and I'm in the process of writing a letter to the prison about it.

Thanks for reading!

I've got a feeling this might happen with my son. Up to press hes on the list for a behaviour management course - app this helps with confidence and socialising etc.

Due to Covid theres a backlog on courses so goodness knows when this will happen!

Thank you for your replies!

I know he can do courses if he asks to when in prison or when he gets out but the problem is that a lot of the time offenders don't see much of a problem with what they've done.

Personally I think all offenders, in all prisons no matter their crime should be forced to do courses and therapy on their behaviour. Punishment doesn't do anything for an individual really.
