I thought people might like to see this. It is about stopping the media from printing names and addresses of families.

Does this just relate to Scotland?
I've read up on this and really want to sign the petition but always weiry of putting my full name anywhere these days. Is it safe to do so?
I think this petition is closed as it was discussed by the Scottish government and subsequently not acted upon because apparently they felt it was enough already that the court apparently does not release addresses to the public, the judge in each case is apparently able to decide whether its not safe for addresses to be read out in court, and in any case if the press are in court and hear the address being read out, they follow a code of conduct (!) that means the address shouldnt be released if it puts people at risk.
And in any case, the petition only relates to Scotland
So nothing has changed.

I would just note, I think one of the reasons they try and justifty it, is so that another person with the same name is not mistaken as the defendant. They also have this mantra that "justice must be seen to be done", or something like that. I think addresses should not be printed, it affects the families too much, but also I don't think defendants need to be named in most cases at all. You can tell the story and see justice is done without a specific name and address. Other European countries do not print names for these types of cases, and they function just fine, indeed have much better criminal justice systems. The damage of printing addresses and names creates disruption and risk for families and makes rehabilitation harder.
We're in a different world now, when a relatively low level crime was reported in a local paper, the damage of giving out addresses was usually short lived, and very localized. People would not have easy access to paper archives if they existed at all. Now the information stays online for possibly decades, and is easily accessible by the whole world. I should never have felt the need to move home at great expense and at a time not of my choosing, because some trashy paper decided to print my address and exaggerate the facts.

Signed. I'm terrified of local media, the impact it will have on my children, my business and my mental health
