Hi. Have been around for some time but not posted before. I have been trying to support my son having contact with his dad who was sent to prison a few weeks ago as I believe it is safe and in my son's best interests. I have today had confirmation that personal information about myself, my son, his father and the nature of the offence was sent from the prison to a Social Services building as part of the process of determining if contact can go ahead. It was signed for at that building but has subsequently gone missing. By pure chance that building ( which houses a number of services) is one of my places of work. The prison also sent it to the wrong place, although Social Care do have some staff located there. I was aware this had probably happened and was kind of trying not to think about it until it was confirmed this afternoon. Social Care did hold there hands up and have triggered a data breach incident.I have now been hit by a tidal wave of anxiety about whether myself and my son are now actually safe as our addresses are in there. I am debating whether I have it in mean to make a complaint or whether that will just make me more stressed. I just don't want to have a massive set back with my mental health.

Hey Ellen,

This forum has been super busy lately and it appears there's no response to you. Although I'm not sure of a suitable response I'm commenting in the hopes one of the lovely users may be able to advise x

Hi Ellen

This sounds terrible, to be going through this on top of everything else. Like Baffled, not sure what advice I could offer you.

I think if this had happened to me , the first thing I would do is request they should do an investigation as to where the package has gone and the route it has taken to get there. Once you have this information you can then decide whether you wish to make a complaint.

I hope this helps in some way.

Thanks for the replies. A really good friend managed to talk me down from the anxiety after my last post. It was just another kick in the teeth but I have moved on now, you just have to don't you? I appreciate you guys responding though.

You would be eligible for compensation if a serious data protection breach and they would also be massivly fined when reported.

Any company who does have a breach has to actually report themselves. I know this from when a company sent me someones personal data by accident! Someone high up called me and offered me some money as the receiver of said info and I think to keep it quiet lol

Yes, I could probably sue both prison and Social Care for this. I won't for my own reasons but I could. I am in the process of complaining to both.
