Who gets told about sex offenders in the area

I was reading an article on Inside Times and I read the below.

Does anyone know how and to whom this information is passed to. Is it a blanket notification? What kind of information is included? I'm a way from this being a concern, but I had considered my person could live with me upon release, but reading this has made me question that - I and my family are part of many community groups that might be informed as they have youth strings to them. I assume if there is a blanket notifications, this would only be to the person in charge of safe guarding, but as many of these people are volunteers and are normal people, with normal emotions, I'm not confident that this information would always remain confidential and on a need to know basis, I guess there are also lots of interpretation as to who would need to know and why. The landlord seems strange, there are so many of them, not sure how this works on a practical level, would it show on their checks?

I bloody hate this.

Who gets told about the movements of sex offenders?

Head teachers, doctors, youth leaders, sports club managers and others, including landlords, are notified of the existence of an offender on a confidential basis. This information dictates the type of employment that sex offenders can apply for.

Thanks Lee, that is reassuring.

I'll give them a call.

I read that in some states in America that sex offenders need to have plaques on their house - That's absolutely mental, I can see why people loose hope and feel that life isn't worth it :-(

I just want to clarify. It is in America that some of the states have plaques. Really don't want to worry people.

The Inside Times magazine is British though.

Ah Inside Time...

All in all I think this might have been an unhelpful post to have made.

You are very supportive Lee.

This seems more like I'd expect. Realistically as we don't have children, neither of our employment is related to children / require DBS check and as long as he didn't affiliate himself with any of the communities I'm involved with (I myself have very little to do with the youth arms of these organisations - I volunteer occasionally but in roles that don't require DBS checking) then it's unlikely anyone will be informed?

My friend is a childminder and has an app or access to a site where she can see anyone on the SOR. She gets notifications of people in the area. There is a photo of the person plus all the details of what they have done and what their sentance is/was. It's not public but in her profession it's accessible,

When I read the post about a website or app, it shocked me, but I wondered too if it is genuine or a website that I am aware of - This is not official. I'm thinking that if it was, too many people will have access to it and it would be widely miss used.

The statement I'd read and put in my original post seemed off, for exactly the same reason - The information would be too widely available and miss used. I thought this when I first read it but another lady on here mentioned she'd moved and had gone to the pub with her husband and was then asked to leave, but they don't know how they knew of his past. It made me wonder if there was any truth in it - But on reflection, I don't think a blanket notification system would be viable, because too many people would know.

Dear Forum users

Here at LFF we do not want our users worrying or distressing unnecessarily and therefore decided it would be best to put some reassurance out there in regards to this topic. The Sex Offender Register (SOR) is treated with high levels of confidentiality amongst professionals. This is a police system (known as ViSOR) in which they are able to check if individuals are subject to the SOR/ notification requirements. Agencies which have access to ViSOR are the Police, Probation and some Prisons. Even then, not every professional by them is granted access to the system and before anyone is, they have to go through a heightened vetting procedure.

If you would like more information on this please see the below:

In regards to the post made earlier in this thread we are unable to comment on this individual. Should anyone have any concerns with information about their family member or friend then we would suggest contacting their nominated ViSOR/PPU/Jigsaw/MOSOVO officer for reassurance and confirmation of this.

Lastly, please all ensure you are practising self-care and looking after yourselves. If in any doubt call the Stop It Now! Helpline. Take care,

Lucy

Yeh, Inside Time.

You can view it online. They also have a forum for people with people in prisons, another member directed me here as I had some questions around prison.
