Hi all. So, my partner moved in with me last year and everything has been going great. He would pay whatever he could towards costs but being on JSA since leaving prison a few years ago obviously means he doesn't have much to contribute. But it meant he could live some sort of life, get buses to his volunteering role, go to the gym, etc. and we have managed. However, just been told his benefit is stopping because he's moved in with me. He is a hard worker, he's not lazy, he volunteers every day with a very safe charity that know all about his background (but even they won't offer him a paid role because of his record), he is always helping people out. But he is so scared of applying for new work and opening himself up to new people and new situations that could become negative, even dangerous, if people find out.l about his past. He has been targeted by people before, even though his offences are pretty historic now. Does anyone know of any types of work where the employers are not likely to ask about DBS etc? his work coach at the job centre was useless and kept suggesting things he obviously would not be allowed to do with this sort of record. It seems most employment asks for something these days. Any suggestions or success stories?

Hi Iris

These were suggested on a previous post a good few weeks ago

Best connection they have branches all over the uk

https://www.ex-seed.co.uk

Also try the unlock website as they have a list of companies that do take on offenders

Also small companys are generally ok as they tend not to ask for DBS but that also depends on the role

I hope.he does find some work soon xx

As has been said, many small companies will no ask for DBS and are also less likely to ask for criminal history.

Havs a look on this site too as it has some advise.

https://www.nacro.org.uk/criminal-record-support-service/support-for-individuals/advice-prisoners-people-licence-sex-offenders-mappa/

What kind of work did he do? What sort of thing would he consider?

There are some industries that are obvious to avoid. Could he have any advise from his PO as to the work he could do or what he should avoid because it will cause problems / a need disclosure down the line.

My person similarly I don't think wants to look for work where there are a whole new bunch of people could find out about his past. He is trying to think of something he can do that means he's self employed.

I also didn't think JSA was related in anyway to the address he lives at or who he may live with? Perhaps worth talking to Citizens Advise.

Go onto the Unlock website and look up the Ban the Box campaign... They offer a large list of employers on their who either don't ask about about previous criminal records or ask at a much much later stage in the process...

Engineering and electronic work are always a great source of income for those who have a record as they don't usually tend to ask about background and if they do, they'reore likely to have people who have also commited a crime work their too...
