So my son goes into work this morning, day after sentencing!! So relieved that he didn't get a custodial sentence & his boss calls him in the office & says he has to dismiss him as he has been told internally about his offence!! We're both very shocked, how did they find out?? There was no media at the court, nothing in the paper today & we're both off social media but as far as we know nothing on there either!! He had DBS checks done 2 years ago when he joined the company. Could sentencing trigger something on his DBS checks & notify his employer?

any advice or help would be very much appreciated

I'm so sorry your son has lost his job Emma. After everything this is another blow.

I don't know how they have found out, hopefully someone will be able to tell you, but if he requires a DBS for his job then it could be that his conviction has gone on as a paperwork matter, although that's very quick if it has!

I hope your son can find new work soon.

A huge hug to you xxx

Sorry he's lost his job Emma. My oh lost his job 2 months prior to sentencing because police decided that after months of investigation his employer 'MIGHT' employ 17 yr old apprentices! He did not get told prior to work calling him in for a meeting. It's so crap. On a positive note he's managed to get a job less than 2 months later in a place with all men, no DBS, decent money, and enjoys it x

Hello SadEmma

I am really sorry to hear that your son has been dismissed from his job.

It may be worth you and your son to contact UNLOCK charity and NACRO charity to discuss with them what has happened and if your son has any rights to challenge this decision, in case your son has been wrongfully/unfairly dismissed. Both charities would also be able to give good advice on his employment options elsewhere and how he can now move forward.

This link may be particularly useful if your son may have been wrongfully/unfairly dimissed.
https://www.nacro.org.uk/criminal-record-support-service/support-for-individuals/employment-rights-and-representation-for-ex-offenders/

If it is peace of mind couldn't your son ask his employer who actually informed them of his conviction rather than keep second guessing? Just a thought...

I hope this info is of some help. x

Thank you all for your replies, he has a home visit today from the probation officer so he's going to ask for advice on how & where to start looking for a new job that doesn't require DBS checks

We're only 4 days from sentencing & I'm still on edge it's going to get out on social media etc, but so far so good!

Now trying to get back to normal, just booked a well needed holiday in 2 weeks time, can't wait!!

Spoke to the doctor about coming off my anti depressants & we've got a plan in place to start after my holiday

Thank you all for all your support & good luck to you all xx

hi Sademma - feel for you on this one. My son's crime showed up on (MY)DBS - although innocent I was asked to leave the premises on the spot! They 'paid me off' in the end.... a terrible terrible experience.....

I had to terminate my sons job which was equally as devastating. It really was one of the worst points of this journey - keep strong, you'll get there xx hug xxxx

Hi smile through tears, was than an enhanced DBS? I might have to get a basic one for work. I believe it's the enhanced version that would pick it up but I want to check with you first

Smile I'm so sorry you were treated so badly, that's awful.

I have an enhanced DBS and disclosed to my employer, full and frank completely honest and full of tears. They are supporting me so far and reassured me that 'it's nothing for me to worry about....' however I'm extremely nervous that this will change if charges are made/if it got into the media etc.

I'm ok *for now*

I don't know how it works for your DBS because there are arguments that people can live in a house share/rent rooms etc and could be living with an offender but not have anything to do with them.

I'm not there yet.
