Is RUI better than bail?

I understand that bail can only be extended a certain number of times / period and that it needs to be applied for. RUI means it's open ended - There is no time pressure on the police.
I imagine there is a very small element of risk management but if there was any real concern on risk level or absconding then he'd have been held in remand. The reality is, I believe, every police force is different in how they use bail. My person was never bailed. He was always RUI but was sentenced for one of the more severe charges and recieved a similarly severe prison sentence.
