Legal aid bill

Hi all,
My person has received a letter from a debt collection agency to recover over 5 grand on behalf of legal aid agency. This is the first he has known about the debt as all previous letters had gone to his solicitor due to them requesting that whilst he was remanded. Apparently the solicitor put in the application but failed to submit his payslips from the time so it has been rejected and is now well outside of the appeal period (2 years plus since first court appearance). Has anyone been in the same situation? He is working with the legal aid agency to try to establish how much he actually owes but since losing his job and going onto universal credit he will struggle to pay it as any savings he had have been eaten up by the changes in his circumstances. Thanks in advance xx

Hi Daffodil,
Sorry, I should have said he's working with them since receiving the letter from the debt collection agency because this was the first he knew about it. He's contacting the debt collectors today to say he's contacted legal aid and is disputing the amount owed. I'll tell him to contact citizens advice about the solicitors because it is bad of them not to forward on letters after requesting that they go to them. I'll update once I know any more incase anyone else finds themselves in the same situation. He was told verbally by the solicitor that he would be covered for the full amount but he doesn't have anything in writing. Thanks for replying xx
