In your experience is it better to get a Barrister outside the legal aid remit? OH Solicitor is currently the one appointed at arrest, he says he's going to find a suitable Barrister. Is finding your own better? Does it make no difference?

Who can provide Character statements (if that's what they are called) if OH is unable to request BF as serving Police Officer? He has no other 'friends' just acquaintances who he wouldn't trust enough to disclose.

Hi

My husband didn't get legal aid but stayed with the solicitors that represented him on arrest. They had a lot of experience and we were very happy with them. But it's best to call around and also to get quotes and also understand their experience.

With Character witness letters. They can be from anyone who he knows. But as his friend is a serving officer it's unlikely he can ask them. His friend will also have to report to work that he knows someone on bail/released under investigation and will have to go to a commission to understand what he needs to do. My husbands family are all serving police officers or staff and none could do letters and from now on if any of them (apart from his monther who is police staff) have contact with him they have to report it. Which means in our case they have cut contact. It is also possible as in your case they are friends not family that they may be told they cannot have any contact.

Regards the letters. One tip is to make sure they are not too similar. We had a few not used as they were so similar. So we only used 4 plus my husbands letter to the judge. One was from me, one from my mum and then 3 friends.

hope this helps.
