So probation has started doing their checks for my husbands release.

His probation officer has been in contact and basically has said she has started the process of checking the suitability of our home address.

What does this mean?

Social services came out after husband pleaded and went on SOR but before sentence and closed the case with a safety plan as we're extremely happy with how we were coping.

The nearest school is about a mile away we live in the middle of a field with 10 houses at most down it. The road isn't full of families maybe 1 other family with children under 16.

I just want to know what It involves I know she coming out to the house at some point to 'check' it over.

But confused what else she needs to check.

Thanks

I can't offer any advise I'm afraid as we are pre sentencing but this is the invasion of privacy and interference I'm dreading.

Sending you strength x

I don’t have any advise either as we’re also pre-sentencing but am interested how it works, our address is just 150 yards from a school but there’s so many schools in the UK it’s difficult to not live ‘too close’ to one. Interesting they will come to the house almost as if to inspect it...

I hope you find out soon what they mean. I wonder if Unlock has some advice on the topic? xxx

From my time on here I believe it doesn't matter what they say as they cannot force you to move from an address you already live at. They may be doing this to inform schools or anyone else in close proximity. I'm not 100% but pretty sure this is the case.

Hi,

Are you in the same property as before sentencing? Did he live there when he signed the sor? To the best of my knowledge it's visor that decide on accommodation but if he has no physical restrictions I believe the only things that can block a move is someone else on the sor or shared access with other families, I think there was a thread on this before. I can only assume that probation want to assess his living arrangements post release, build up a picture of your family dynamics. If he has no physical restrictions they shouldn't be interested in the nearest school etc xxx

My husband had a police check after signing SOR and it was fairly close to a secondary school which didn't seem to be an issue (he would never be home during school hours anyway), but the shared bathroom was. He's now moving somewhere else which is actually working out better anyway. He's only in short term lets at the moment so not an issue to move.

This is such a grey area. I called Unlock and they weren't much help with any affirmative answers as to what would and wouldn't be allowed. I'm looking at buying a house with shared access and they couldn't say whether it would be a problem or not.

What they did say was police officers don't have a say. It is the probation service that can have a say. I'm not sure I got good advise from them though as they also said the police could inform neighbours of they felt that was needed for safe guarding - Thinking about that now though, that doesn't seem like it would be right.

A friend I've met at prison visits is allowed to have her partner home and she has a school at both ends of her road. I really do think it's a mixed bag with no set guidelines which is very frustrating - I'm looking to move and all I want to do is find someone I can be sure that he can come to so he can find his feet again, unfortunately most properties in my budget come with shared access.

My son came home to me and i have a young family with 3 children living next door.

Probation officer did a zoom call to see the inside of my house as it was still lockdown when he came home.

As long as i did not have children living with me it was ok, still fightting to get his son to spend nights with us, as his wife has left.

Daffodil,

I'm sure I've read on here schools may be notified and maybe local clubs for children. I may have got that wrong.

After my OH was released from remand, they said they could not stop him coming to his previous address. I wanted him to live at his sisters for us to get our heads around what is happening. His visor said they did not see a problem, especially as she was aware of the area he was moving to, though it was hundreds of miles away. But it was the local police that said no. All we had was an email sent to probation to say too close to a school. He is nearer to a school here and it is a huge distance to the nearest school by his sisters. We can on.y guess they did not want the extra paperwork. So it is very hit and miss what they say. But it was the police that said no.
