Hi my person changed his name after charges . The solicitor handed it to the judge on the day in magistrates. There was no media in the room and the name change was accepted. He then ment to crown court under the new name. No reporters in the room ect . But a few hours later there was a post in the media this was in his new name so we were like thank god . But then the next day another online newspaper reported it and added also known as the original name :( . Lots of people on here arnt in the media and I think people have just had new names used .

Noone we know has picked up that the media post it about him because there is no picture.

Hi,

I understand why people want to change their name but might be an idea to do it after court/conviction/prison etc. only so that the media may report what they like but at a later time the person may start new with a new name and if people google search their new name it won't come up with anything. Of course your person will have to tell police of change of name and there is Sarah's law which means you can ask for information on pretty much anyone to see if they are on the sor however many people still don't know you can be put on that for something as simple as urinating in public and will jump to conclusions. The "sor" websites you see online are run by vigilantes so suggest never typing in somebody's name (new or old) into it as it just flags the name for them to look into. The only way of getting that info is by contacting the police but again it doesn't specify why they are or were on it.

Hi sadmum..... its nice to hear something good, all I seem to read is bad things at the moment. Sorry do you mind me asking how you changed his name, and did you inform the solicitor? I have seen 2 ways to change it by deed poll.. xx

Hi KT , I know it's such a scary time , I look back at it all now and have no idea how I got through it all

The Deed Poll I just did the free one online and then had to email it to the Solicitor and OIC, then I printed one off and sent to DVLA for his driving licence

Hope this helps

Hi Ellbee... I have read your message...thank you so much for reply. My husband thinks the same about cynical view by police and judge, but I honestly just don't want his current name in the press. I wasn't aware you could change it back afterwards so that's very helpful advice..thank you xx

I think it's worth a try to name change and I will recommend it to my husband.

How long does the name change take?

Is there still enough time to do it once he's charged?

My husband is under investigation and it might still take a long time until we get an outcome, so don't want to do anything hastily

Ellbee, yes exactly the same for us.. definitely not trying to dismiss it, but the damage to my son and our family if it got out is too scary to think about xx

Sorry for deleting posts but as it's a public forum I don't take any chances.

Kt, I feel that the media backlash is the worst bit of it, it feels like myself and the kids would be punished for doing absolutely nothing wrong at all, and that is totally unfair. People gossip so much where we live and I do not want to move house. I am so furious (I know we all are) how this crime is tackled and how the families suffer so much

Completely agree, we also don't want to move or uproot my younger child.

Fully understand deleting posts. Need to do everything we can to protect ourselves and our families don't we. Xx
