Hi all. Just wondering if people had a similar experience to us. I find it odd that the police didn't tae passwords form his email or social media. They began to ask, but then never finished the conversation and left without that information. I would have thought it was essential they took that stuff.

Did they take that information with everyone else? And if not, can anyone explain to me why they wouldn't?!

Hi

The police experts can get into it all with or without passwords. They took our sons computer and phone. Both were passworded. They never asked for passwords but son offered them. They advised it’s quicker to check with that information but that they can find it all without the passwords . My sons offence was communication but I think the requirement would be the same regardless of the offence x

I know they can get into computer without passwords, but for online social media and email I don't think they could get in without issuing a warrant to social media companies. I saw the head of the Met police talking about how hard it is to get into social media accounts without passwords. So why didn't they ask for my partners passwords for accounts?? All they asked for was laptop password.

The police didn’t ask for my passwords but I know they checked my Messenger messages. And the messages of another witness.

Hi again

The police can definitely get access to all social media and emails without passwords. Their tech people can do it. It just takes longer. What they cannot get into without passwords is wassap but they are trying to change that at the moment. Hope that helps x

Hi nicenana,

I don't think that's right. Have a look at this from just before Christmas. This was a murder trial, and this is the head of the Met saying this. They can't gain access to social media without passwords and if they don't have them the companies very often refuse.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/sep/04/cressida-dick-calls-for-fast-legal-access-to-social-media-accounts

Which is why I find it so odd that they didn't make sure they got them on the day.

Morning Christina, the police asked my partner for his passwords, but they made a point of saying that they'd still be able to get into things without them - it would just make things take longer and he'd be seen as uncooperative if he refused to give the passwords.

Hi

i read that to but they got into one of my sons email without a password. He gave them the pass words for all his account apart from a very old email. There was nothing in the old email but they still got into it and checked. We were also told by the police that they can get into them all without passwords but that it takes them longer. The password they needed was wassap more than anything because the police said they can’t access that without a password at the moment. That said the cid officer that came to us could have got that wrong as he is not an tech expert. My son gave over all the passwords he had because he wanted it over asap. I assume the majority of people hand over the passwords for the same reason, especially if it’s true they will find it anyway x

Thanks for that, it's helpful. It still leaves me confused as to why they didn't even ask for them properly, just took the stuff away. He was willing to hand them over but they didn't bother taking them and just left!
