Group action: campaign for legislation to remove illegal content from legal online platforms
Notifications OFF
To this pool/team/community/club of compassionate, insightful, knowledgeable, caring, powerful, frustrated and motivated people. This is a very early and unstructured idea, but I wonder if there is scope for us to collaborate on drafting a communication to make the case for (and demand) legislative change so that illegal material (or material that incites or implies or promotes illegal behaviours) is removed and blocked from legal online platforms.
On a date to be decided, this could be sent to very media outlet, news channel, radio station, newspaper, MP, the Law Society, campaign groups, police chiefs, etc etc...
I appreciate this would not be easy (but no harder than anything we're going through) and a key consideration would be how to issue/circulate without compromising our anonymity).
There has to be some good to come out of our experiences, and together we may be able to present a powerful and united voice to give a massive wake up call to those with the authority to effect change.
Welcome any thoughts, views, challenges etc.

Hi, I'm in, as you say, you only necessarily click on one thing online without realising sometimes the black hole that potentially comes with one click and boom your world could implode!!!
I really hope going forward the whole world can open their eyes to the whole picture that we see xx

I'm afraid a lot of this is already covered in the online safety bill, which is being discussed in parliament at the moment. It would mean that social media firms who don't take down content quickly enough would face huge fines.
There is a lot being done to remove content. If you read the Internet Watch Foundations latest report, they set out all the different things that are going on.
What you could do though, is focus on age and identity verification for all aspects of the internet, because that's where the loopholes are, in my view. It's just too easy for people to create accounts on websites, using just an email address and nothing else. If every time you created an account you had to give a credit card number, that would not only stop children from accessing these sites, it would also make people think twice, because they know they can be traced. Its the anonymity of the internet, which makes people behave badly and take risks. Remove the anonymity and you remove that temptation.

Absolutely, definitely. I've been thinking about this recently too. I've also wondered is some people have a legal case to bring.
But group action on legislation is a great idea. A well considered and structured campaign. There are so many programs/ outlets that I think would be interested in this.

Daffodil, I was only having a conversation about this with a friend yesterday. I think awareness needs to be raised. I think TV ads or something. It doesn't have to be as blunt as "don't watch illegal porn" but it needs to say "do you know if what you're viewing online is legal?" "Do you know the consequences of viewing illegal material online?" It is child abuse and breaks families and ruins relationships etc etc.
This is something I feel very passionate about. I'd love to organise a petition or something but I don't want to lose my anonymity.

InTatters Keep us updated, I'd like to help if I can x
Lois34 I agree on this too, particularly on chat/messaging platforms. I think there is often a thought process that they are "only" talking and thinking what harm could come - I'm only talking?! And also not knowing it could very likely be illegal. In reality it's both illegal and even just talking can significantly damage and impact children's outlook on the world.
Keep me updated. I will help any way I can x
I don't know much about digital and online legislation, but just wanted to echo sentiments and say you also have my support here.
As someone who's life was turned upside down as a result of an accidental download from a very popular well-known social media platform, I do think there needs to be better restrictions from the platforms themselves.

There are many ways of blocking access to certain sites on the web, but also many ways to get around those blocks. This country blocks access to all file sharing sites for example. But you can easily get around that with a VPN. It does come down to individuals taking responsibility for ther own safety, by not downloading apps that are known to be dangerous, like KIK.
