I understand it is a risk assessment to plan, measure and reduce reoffending. But who uses it and how?

My person has had his redone whilst in prison. His sentencing plan is literally nothing, because they do not believe there is anything to resolve. I understand this will be passed to his community PO but I'm not sure what relavance this has in reality /practical situations. Everything bar one category he is classed as low (Relationship- He doesn't have a strong family network - His parents have passed, he's estranged from one of his sisters and never had a close relationship with the other). His risk of reoffending is below 1%.

Whilst I'm relieved at all the outcomes, I don't know what this means?

I'd also be interested to know what impact, if any, this has on sentencing. It incorrectly had him down as a alcoholic and in debt. He also wasn't asked to respond to a set of question that his prison probation officer has said he should have been asked to respond to.

Hi SAL - your question inspired me to check this out on Google although our situation is many months (years even) behind the need for assessments. So (after finding multiple references to an Oasis tribute band which did make me smile and wonder if they know) I found this.... https://www.justiceinspectorates.gov.uk/hmiprobation/research/the-evidence-base-probation/supervision-of-service-users/assessment/

and was especially interested in the final paragraph

'Wherever possible, the service user should be meaningfully involved in their assessment and enabled to identify issues themselves, working out who they want to be and what they want to achieve. The concepts of self-efficacy and self-determination – the individual taking charge of their own life – recognises the service user’s responsibilities and the need for them to determine their own future behaviour and find their own solutions. Giving service users a voice, treating them with respect and generating trust are all important ingredients of procedural justice. Furthermore, engaging the service user in the process of assessment helps to build the one-to-one trusting personal relationships which can be a powerful vehicle for change'

and I wondered how much these noble sounding words are taken seriously when our people are actually assessed?

Thank you for the replies. It certainly seems he wasn't consulted in the intial assessment, he was involved in the reassessment, but with everything bar one element marked as low risk there doesn't seem to be anything further to engage with.

Are there different assessments after he's completed his sentence? He's was given a life time SOR and SHPO which seemed excessive at the time of sentencing (his PSR had him as low risk) and even more so looking at the assessment.

My understanding and from experience is it mostly useful to the PO and maybe the visor. We had hoped to use the report for the family court to support supvised contact but SS don't really seem to know how it works and doesn't fulfil all Thier criteria (the report doesn't assess individuals in great context such as offenders children). It is more a measure of risk of offending overall.

The report has been used as one of a few other assesments as supporting documentarion for my persons family court case, but I would highlight it can't be used solely if you hope in future to use it as evidence for supervises contact - not sure if relevant to you and if you wil need SS involvement
