My LO was sentenced last month to 4 years 4 months to do half. Would he be able to apply for Cat D or are sex offenders not eligible?

I don't think that anyone goes into a Cat D straight away. It's for people coming to the end of a long sentence and a reward for good behaviour.

What seems to happen, is that they all go to a local Cat B holding prison first, where they get assesed and then they will be sent on somewhere else. For low risk people, that would usually be a Cat C, but there is the option to send them to an SO only prison as well, although I don't how they decide that. Since the prisons are pretty much full up, it may just depend where there is a space.

To get a cat D place your OH will need to be categorised first which is usually between 3 & 6 months before this happens. They need to prove themselves first. It then depends on whether there are any spaces available.

Usually people will have served 6 months and have less than 2 years still to serve. I only know as my OH waiting to be categorised.
